Langar

A free meal for everyone, every day

Langar is the community kitchen that every Gurdwara keeps. The food is vegetarian, cooked and served by sevadars, and shared sitting together as equals. Nobody is turned away and nobody is asked to pay.

What to expect

Cover your head, take your shoes off, wash your hands and join the line. Take what you will eat; you can always go back for more. If you can, help with the washing up before you leave.

Why we do it

Guru Nanak Dev Ji started langar five hundred years ago so that people of every background would eat together. It is still the simplest statement of what a Gurdwara is for: service, equality and a welcome without conditions.

Help with langar

Families often give langar seva for a birthday, an anniversary, or in memory of someone. You can also add degh and langar seva for the whole day to any booking. Ask at the office or ring 01332 776872.
